Practical Workshop: Arts and Heritage - A Creative Partnership

Workshop led by:

Introduction

This was a practical workshop with a number of activities designed to get us thinking about using arts with a heritage theme. After splitting into two groups, the participants began the session with an introductory activity, using small children’s toys. We each chose an item and used it to introduce ourselves to the rest of the group, including our reason for our choice and what the item meant to us.

We then discussed the various projects that we were involved in, and chose one project within each group to look at in more detail.

Using Museum as space for regular activity for residents of Cheetham Hill and the world

We listed places of origin / heritage: Vietnam, Leeds, Turkey, Iraq, Pakistan, Poland, Somalia, Scotland, England, India, Iran

We listed opportunities to use the arts in the project:

  • Art work from different cultures
  • Food
  • Film showings
  • 5-a-side football
  • Festival
  • Aerosol Arabic graffiti work
  • Scripts
  • Street games
  • Games
  • Suitcase reflecting journeys made
  • Music
  • Postcards – words and/or pictures
  • Video booths
  • Annual video archive
  • Explore common threads
  • Mural
  • Costumes
  • Different communities video-interviewing each other

Attracting young volunteers in heritage

We looked at different methods and some related issues:-

  • Indoor and outdoor lighting projects
  • Exhibition related to the experience of young people
  • Not a given that people will feel comfortable with art
  • Community maps – utilising local stories, memories and children’s drawings
  • Mystery plays, faith and community inspired
  • Something new in the building such as animals, football, use as a venue for music, barbeque, light show
  • Film screening
  • Arts media project about people who lived locally and where they came from
  • Need for artists to facilitate with a number of skills – training and development may be needed by artists in leading groups
